BABA SIRI CHAND’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION 2019

This year Gobind Sadan was very happy to welcome many old and new sangat members to the celebration of the 525th birthday of its revered Baba Siri Chand Ji. Indra Devta also made his appearance, sending rain for two of the three days of the celebration, even though there had been no rain for nearly two weeks before the event, and people had assumed that the monsoon had finished. Thus the decades-old record of sure rainfall during Baba Siri  Chand’s birthday celebration at Gobind Sadan remained intact.

Seven simultaneous Akhand Paaths began on the morning of 5th September and continued until the morning of 7th September.  Every morning many people gathered to praise Baba Siri Chand Ji by chanting “Dhan, dhan Baba Siri Chand Sahib” in the central havan. On Saturday, 7th September, Gurdaspur Sangat sang kirtan for hours, followed by a special havan at Angeetha Sahib.

On Sunday, 8th September, many sangat members gathered in the diwan hall for a programme of kirtan and talks about the true story of Baba Siri Chand, in contrast to the  negative myths that had been created about him. Bhai Mehtab Singh, a renowned Katha vachak, gave a detailed history of Baba Siri Chand. He said, “Baba Siri Chand took birth from the sacred womb of Bibi Sulakhni as son of the great soul Guru Nanak, Guru of Hindus and Pir of Muslims. To take birth in his house means that a very great soul came, a great soul who remained a renunciate all his life. All the gods and goddesses showered flowers on the birth of Baba Siri Chand. Why? Because ‘You have come in human form.’  If you want to understand the principles of renunciation, look at the life of Baba Siri Chand. If you want to understand non-attachment, look at the life of Baba Siri Chand. Even as a child he used to sit cross-legged and meditate. His mother used to search for him, but they couldn’t find him but eventually he was usually found beneath a tree meditating in isolation. He used to say, ‘I like to stay in seclusion.’ Guru Nanak never forced him to take a householder’s life.”

Professor Swairaj Sandhu, retired from DAV University, Chandigarh, said, “There are many misconstrued myths created about Baba Siri Chand. We were told that Baba Siri Chand created a separate sect apart from that of Guru Nanak and did not follow his father. I have come to Gobind Sadan for the second time and I am so happy that we know the correct facts about Baba Siri Chand. He was born in the 73rd generation of the Udasi Sampardai. Siddhus of the Udasi Sampardai considered Baba Siri Chand as their Guru, and considered Guru Granth Sahib as the body of their Guru.”

Sri Balkrishan Naik, Member of the Central Governing Council of Vishwa Hindu Parisad, noted, “Whenever there is a decline in dharma, the great ones come to deliver us. Baba Siri Chand lived a life of great sadhana. He was a great guide. We all know that in Guru Granth Sahib the words of 15 more saints have been included, and it is a matter of great pride for Hindus that the words of Indian saints are mentioned in this great scripture.”

“Keep growing in love for your Master. Do not look to this side or that or even at the path ahead, because people will always be criticizing you.”

Baba Virsa Singh

“Trees do not wear crosses, but the great spiritual beings see God in trees. Water has no symbols, but Guru Gobind Singh says, ‘My God is in water.”
