Scholars in Residence

Babaji has long supported the work of many notable scholars.
Bhai Nahar Singh and Bhai Kirpal Singh were recognized as among India’s
preeminent research scholars. Many American scholars of Indian history were
trained under their tutelage. Together they compiled and published much of
the original Indian National Archives Documents related to the Indian
Independence Movement, under the heading of “Struggle for Free Hindustan.”
These volumes are housed in some of the world’s most famous academic libraries.
Bhai Nahar Singh passed away in 1998 at the age of 93, and Bhai Kirpal Singh
left for his heavenly abode in 2010. Until the end of his long life, he was still
managing the day-to-day activities of the Institute. Outside of his commitment
to a spiritual life—he rose for his morning bath and prayers at 1:30 A.M.—one
could find him in the library from dawn to dusk. Besides his excellent English,
he was one of the few living scholars fluent in all languages of both the Dasam
Granth and Guru Granth Sahib. Additionally, he had the ability to lecture
almost continuously on the history and philosophy of any of the world’s religions.

Another renowned scholar continues to volunteer her brilliant services to
Gobind Sadan Institute: Dr. Surjit Kaur Jolly. She is the retired Principal of
Shyama Prasad Mukherji College, University of Delhi. With her background in
history, she has specialized in subjects including Sikh Revivalist Movements in
Punjab, gender rights, human rights, spiritualism, and comparative religions.
She is a Senior Fellow in the prestigious Indian Council of Historical Research
and also Pradhanmantri Museum and Library and has written a number of
acclaimed books, including her great research opus, Dynamics of a Socio-
Economic Revolution: Gobind Sadan.
