My mother, Mrs. Surinderpal Kaur, was admitted into Emergency at an excellent hospital in New Delhi in a serious condition on the night of 11th-12th March 2005 in an unconscious state. She was found to have Hepatitis B, jaundice, and a bilirubin count of 14 (compared to a normal count of 1). The doctors began treating her on March 12th. They informed our family that she had only a 50% chance of survival. By that evening, they told the family that her liver was 80% damaged, and that she had only a 20% chance of surviving. They discussed the possibility of a liver transplant, but the cost would be 25,00,000 to 30,00,000 rupees [$58,000 to $70,000—far too much for the average Indian to afford], that it would have to be done in America, and that even then there was no guarantee of success. My father and I were very worried; there seemed no way out.
Seeing no way out, at about 10:30 p.m. that night my father Mohinder Singh made a request to our Saviour and Guide at Gobind Sadan, the Living Sri Gurudev, the Almighty, Baba Virsa Singh Ji Maharaj, through one of his disciples. Maharaj Ji responded quickly and said that although death was looming large on her head, and the doctors had given up their hope of my mother’s survival, the Great Power was there to save her and our faith would save her.
