My mother, Mrs. Surinderpal Kaur, was admitted into Emergency at an excellent hospital in New Delhi in a serious condition on the night of 11th-12th March 2005 in an unconscious state. She was found to have Hepatitis B, jaundice, and a bilirubin count of 14 (compared to a normal count of 1). The doctors began treating her on March 12th. They informed our family that she had only a 50% chance of survival. By that evening, they told the family that her liver was 80% damaged, and that she had only a 20% chance of surviving. They discussed the possibility of a liver transplant, but the cost would be 25,00,000 to 30,00,000 rupees [$58,000 to $70,000—far too much for the average Indian to afford], that it would have to be done in America, and that even then there was no guarantee of success. My father and I were very worried; there seemed no way out.

Seeing no way out, at about 10:30 p.m. that night my father Mohinder Singh made a request to our Saviour and Guide at Gobind Sadan, the Living Sri Gurudev, the Almighty, Baba Virsa Singh Ji Maharaj, through one of his disciples. Maharaj Ji responded quickly and said that although death was looming large on her head, and the doctors had given up their hope of my mother’s survival, the Great Power was there to save her and our faith would save her. Maharaj Sahib Ji  ordered someone at Gobind Sadan to light seven candles at Jesus’s Place and burn black sesame seed at the havan (sacred fire) on our behalf. Maharaj Ji also told us to make a pledge from the hospital to distribute Hanuman’s rot (large rounds of sweet bread given to the poor) and an offering of sweet rice on Thursday, and everything would be okay—we should not worry at all. Maharaj Ji himself was so worried that He ordered the entire community of Gobind Sadan to do Chaur Sahib (waving the sacred whisk) on Sri Guru Granth Sahib (the sacred Sikh scripture) the whole day of Sunday (13th March).

On Sunday, March 13, although there was very little improvement, by now we were absolutely sure of the survival of my mother. Within the next two days the doctors, who were unsure of the change in her health, could find improvement, though a very slow one. But on the next day, on Wednesday 16th March, the doctors were stunned themselves to see tremendous improvement in her condition, and were very happy. We had placed a picture of Maharaj Ji in our room of the hospital. The doctors asked whose photograph this was. I told that this was the power of the God who made this miracle.

The doctors then started further testing on my mother to know the reason for the disease and why it was cured so quickly. They discharged her on 22nd March. She continued improving day by day by the Grace and Blessings of Maharaj Ji, and now she is quite fine, cooking for the family and such.
